What Happens at Hillside

Welcome and Registration!

In Year 5 we begin our day by either completing a small challenge or we read our own books. The challenge is normally Countdown related. We might have to find the longest word possible with a selection of letters or make a certain number with only a few numbers to choose from.

English

Literacy time! Each lesson is different but we usually begin with a SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) activity to get our brains warmed up. Recently we have been learning about determiners, pronouns and prepositions. This activity is followed by learning about a particular type of writing which we then put into practise. Our most recent writing has been trying to persuade someone to visit Peru… We really want to go too!

Mathematics

As soon as we come in from break we complete a maths problem solving challenge in our books. We can discuss methods of working out or we can use equipment around the room to help us solve it. We then begin our learning of that day’s topic.

On Tuesdays, we complete a times-tables challenge to try and beat our score from the previous week and on Fridays we have a whole lesson based on problem solving.

Lunch Time

In Year 5, we go straight outside at lunch time and await the whistle for us to go and have lunch, whether a hot dinner or packed lunch. Once we’ve have eaten, we go back outside where we can continue to enjoy the variety of activities.

Learning in the Afternoon

These include: science, geography, history, computing, PSHE, RE, PE, art and Spanish. We get a rich diet of learning in the afternoon.

End of the Day...

Once we are all packed up, we collect all of our belongings and go outside to meet our families.
