What Happens at Hillside - Year 2
The start of the school day...
We start our morning refreshed and ready to go! First, we begin by warming up our brains with an early morning challenge. We then practice our weekly spellings while our teacher takes the register.
After that we split into our spelling and phonics groups and enjoy learning about different sounds and spelling rules and how they can help us with our reading and writing. We enjoy playing trash or treasure, or quiz quiz trade. Our phonics activities are practical and interactive and we love them!
We then move into our daily writing lesson. All of our writing lessons are linked to our current topic and this helps us to make connections and really explore our topic in detail.
We start with reflection time, we get to look at our previous work and see how we have done, and see if there are any ways we could make our work even better.
In our writing sessions we enjoy reading and thinking about texts and love drama activities. One of our favourite is Hot Seat, when we get to pretend to be different characters. We learn the skills we will need and we get to put them into practice on Friday when we have our weekly Big Write session.
On a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday we have guided reading workshops. These are for half an hour and the two grown-ups in the room listen to us read and then we have to really think about what we have read and answer questions. Sometimes we have an independent activity to do. We love to write book reports and alternative endings for stories.
After all that work we love to give our brains a break and enjoy a well-deserved playtime! We enjoy to play with the active playground equipment or just relax and talk with our friends. There’s always things to do and friends to play with.
We start our maths session with a reasoning starter, this really gets our brains fired up and ready. We like playing odd one out, when we have to give reasons why a number could be the odd one out.
We start with reflection time and then we move into our maths session. We are working really hard on becoming efficient mathematicians and we learn new skills or apply the skills we have learned to a range of mathematical topics. We love working together with our talking partners or in collaborative groups. At the end of every lesson we reflect on our learning and think about what we want to do next.
On a Wednesday, we enjoy active maths. Our teacher takes us to the hall and we get to use the space to practice our mental maths skills in a fun and active way!
Phew! Our tummies are now rumbling and we are ready for our lunch. We wash our hands and most of us take advantage of the universal free school meals. Or we might bring in a lunchbox from home. As a health promoting school we know the importance of eating healthily so we try to eat some lovely fruit or veg with every meal.
We have a wonderful range of lessons in the afternoon. We enjoy PE, Computing, Science or Topic work. We love the way our afternoons are varied and different.
End of the day...
Most days we have an assembly to end the day. We enjoy listening to the assembly and reflecting on our day’s learning.
